In a precedent-setting ruling, the Judea Military Court on Sunday convicted five relatives of Omar al-Abed, the 19-year-old terrorist who murdered three members of the Salomon family in the Samaria settlement of Halamish on July 21, of failing to prevent a crime. All five will serve prison sentences of varying lengths.
Al-Abed's two brothers and his uncle were sentenced to eight months in prison. His father was sentenced to two months in prison, and his mother, who was also convicted of incitement for urging other Palestinians to carry out similar attacks, was sentenced to a month in prison and ordered to pay a fine.
Before al-Abed set out for Halamish from his adjacent village of Kaubar, he posted on Facebook that he intended to commit the killings for the sake of Al-Aqsa mosque.
"I love life, but there is no life after what you see on Al-Aqsa," he wrote. "I am going to die for Al-Aqsa."
He crossed the settlement's security fence and reached the home of the Salomon family, where he proceed to stab Yossi Salomon and two of his children, Chaya and Elad, to death. Tova Salomon, Yossi's wife, was also stabbed, but survived.
Less than a week after the brutal attack, al-Abed's home was razed.
In related news, the Palestinian from Hebron who stabbed and wounded Niv Nechamia in a supermarket in Yavne earlier this month has been indicted for attempted murder.
According to the indictment, Ismail Abu Aram, 19, had embraced Islamist beliefs and become inspired to carry out "the commandment of jihad against the Jewish Israeli occupation."
On August 2, Abu Aram, who did not have a entry permit for Israel, left his home in Hebron and took public transportation to the city of Yavne. He was carrying pepper spray and decided to obtain a knife to kill his former employer. When he could not find his intended victim, he planned to steal a knife and seek out another victim.
Abu Aram entered a Shufersal supermarket branch, took a knife from a display stand, and hid it inside his trousers. He then started looking for a Jewish man to kill. When he spotted Nechamia stocking shelves, he took out the knife and jumped on him, stabbing Nechamia in the neck, the chest, the abdomen, and the head. When Nechamia managed to get away despite his serious wounds, Abu Aram released pepper spray at his face.
Abu Aram fled the scene was apprehended by a passerby, who managed to hold him until police arrived to arrest him.
The indictment against Abu Aram states that "he did everything he could to carry out the terrorist act, demonstrated extreme calm, and planned every detail and step carefully, taking the utmost care to ensure that he would not be thwarted."
